EXIVIOUS announce split

Dutch progressive quartet EXIVIOUS have announced splitting up. The band will perform a few final shows in 2017, before calling it quits.

Guitarist Tymon Kruidenier states on behalf of the band:

"Dear friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to end EXIVIOUS. I started the band not long after I picked up the guitar and ever since, it has been a major part of my life. EXIVIOUS has always evolved along our musical tastes. From the death metal days of our early demos to the jazz-fusion inspired debut album to the post-rock inspired second album, 'Liminal'.

I started a progressive singer/songwriter band called OUR OCEANS and we released our debut album at the end of 2015. Taking on the vocal duties in this band changed everything for me; the way I see myself and what I aspire to become as a musician has completely shifted. Singing allows me to express myself in a way that I could never achieve on guitar. This is why I decided to continue my musical endeavours with OUR OCEANS and focus all my energy on that band.

Meanwhile, my band mates’ need to play progressive, jazz-fusion inspired music has faded as well. Guitarist Michel Nienhuis has been working on a second album for his post-black metal band DODECAHEDRON, which is going to be released early next year. Bassist Robin Zielhorst has started a groove metal band ONEGODLESS - The artist formerly known as MOURN. Their debut album is to be released early next year as well and features Yuma van Eekelen on drums.
We discussed about changing style and include vocals for EXIVIOUS, but that simply did not feel right. We would hate to disappoint or disrespect our fans by not remaining true to the essence of what EXIVIOUS stands for. Therefore, we are leaving the past behind for what it is and we are happily moving on to our future bands and projects.

We thank our incredible fans for their love and support. To celebrate our musical journey and to say a final goodbye, we will be doing a handful of farewell shows in 2017."

EXIVIOUS operate in a space where metal meets jazz-fusion and post-rock. The band blends a wide variety of musical genres into a coherent, unified sound that’s driven by a penchant for lush soundscapes, technical precision, and sporadic time signatures. EXIVIOUS have toured Europe extensively, playing shows alongside bands such as OBSCURA, SPAWN OF POSSESSION and GOROD.

A bright new star is rising fast in the celestial spheres of progressive music: EXIVIOUS. Featuring current and former members of DODECAHEDRON, CYNIC, PESTILENCE and others, EXIVIOUS' music is as avant-garde and nuanced as its members' backgrounds suggest. ‘Liminal’ excels in delivering lush and beautiful songs, flowing gracefully from complex arrangements to poignant moments of restraint. Yet how does an instrumental band speak to their listeners? “Through melancholic melodies and energetic rhythms, dense harmonies, starbursts of noise and breathless interludes”, the band tell in their own words. “Organic music that speaks of duality and plurality, of fleeting ideas and ephemeral moments, unexpected climaxes and explosive epiphanies – emotions from life captured in sound. That, in a nutshell, is EXIVIOUS”.

The quartet was founded by Tymon Kruidenier with a clear vision to amalgamate jazz fusion and metal in previously unexplored ways. In a first phase, a number of demos experimented with different approaches: ‘Demo 1999’, ‘Demo 2001’ and ‘Exivious’ (2002). The next phase witnessed the band gaining a stable line-up, which came to fruition in 2005 when Robin Zielhorst, Michel Nienhuis (ORDER OF THE SOURCE BELOW, later known as DODECAHEDRON) and Stef Broks (TEXTURES) joined Tymon. EXIVIOUS' self-titled and critically acclaimed debut was released in 2009. Yet instead of following up on their success, Tymon and Robin joined CYNIC in 2010, putting their own band onto a hiatus. After leaving the US Prog legends, EXIVIOUS was born again with a renewed sense of purpose and vigor. As Stef had meanwhile fully committed to TEXTURES, he was replaced by Yuma van Eekelen. In 2011 the Dutch started to perform live, playing festivals and joined OBSCURA and others on tour. At the end of 2012, EXIVIOUS kicked off a crowd-funding campaign for their upcoming album ‘Liminal’ and reached their goal within a week. ‘Liminal’ captures emotions, while conveying feelings and experiences in a way that instrumental music rarely explores. It's experimental, original and most importantly, immersive, drawing the listener into a world of sound that is at once challenging and intriguing. Dive in deep and chill out!
